News flash: I'm going to Australia in February, so this Web site may be switched off at any time.
Using Luddite In Odd Ways
You can make Luddite behave almost exactly like a New Museums Site PWF Macintosh. The only differences are: (i) its hard disk configuration is different (but not in any way that's important), and (ii) it's in the wrong subnet.
First of all, decide whether you're going to need to use IP. If you're not going to need IP, you can omit the first step below (the one in italics). (Explanation: When you reboot Luddite as a PWF Macintosh, it's configured to get its IP configuration from the server, just like a real PWF Mac. But it's not in the same IP subnet as its server, so that doesn't work properly.)
- Open Mounter from the Apple menu. Highlight the partition called "Macintosh HD" and choose "Mount". When the icon called "Macintosh HD" appears on the desktop, open it up, and copy MacTCP from the folder "replacement MacTCP" in the public folder into the Control Panels folder in the system folder. (To copy rather than move it, hold down option as you drag it.)
- Open Mounter from the Apple menu. For the partition that has a solid little Macintosh icon in the B column (which will probably be Monotreme), click on the little Macintosh to unselect it.
- Click on the little Macintosh icon in the B column corresponding to Macintosh HD, to select it. Also, check the box in the A column. (This makes it mount at startup.)
- Restart Luddite.
You now have a PWF Macintosh. You can launder it in the normal way, but you may have to repeat the italicised step above after each laundry.
- When you've finished, find Mounter in the public folder on Macintosh HD, and run it. Uncheck the A box by Macintosh HD, and select the Macintosh icon by the normal startup disk (probably Monotreme).
Please tell me if these instructions don't make sense. I haven't put much work into them, because I'm not expecting them to be used!
Also, please tell me if anything goes wrong. Don't worry if you trash my disk: I have backups!
