Mind Glossary

This is a short glossary for the course Philosophy of Mind at La Trobe, second semester 2012.

There is much more information available on all these terms elsewhere … but some of it is contradictory! The point of this glossary is to explain the way we’re going to be trying to use the terms in this course.

brain Collections of neurons organised roughly the way they are in humans and other “higher” animals (including distantly related animals such as cephalopods). Our descriptions of brains are always more or less scientific descriptions, so they are “third-person” descriptions (see the reading by Nagel).
