Research Students

This is all out of date. I’m leaving it here for the moment because there are some links to the very interesting work these people have been doing.

Jason, 2010

Adam La Caze (PhD, University of Sydney), with Mark Colyvan. See also http://homepage.mac.com/mcolyvan/mcpostgrads.html and Adam’s wiki at Adam Home Page.

Adam is studying the philosophy of clinical trials, especially from a statistical perspective.

I’m helping Ian Wills (PhD, University of Sydney; main supervisor Ofer Gal), but not much. Ian’s main supervisor is Ofer Gal (<<http://www.usyd.edu.au/hps/staff/academic/Ofer_Gal.shtml).>>.>>)

Ian is working on the philosophy of engineering, and especially on how engineers learn from failure, with case studies drawn from the work of Thomas Edison.

Tom Swann (honours,2009)

Tom is studying the closure of physical laws, or the supervenience of normativity on the physical, or something. It will become clear very soon.

Chris Wilcox (honours, 2008).

Chris studied the indispensability of mathematical entities, and other issues in the philosophy of mathematics.

Catie Flick (PhD, ANU; main supervisor John Weckert).

Catie is studying informed consent in information technology. A great example of this is those horrible user agreements which you agree to without reading before installing software.

Katrina Hutchison (PhD, ANU).

Katrina is studying free will. She’s looking at the free will vs. determinism debate in a way which makes the metaphysics relevant to the debate on morality (e.g. whether evil-doers deserve retribution if their actions are predetermined).

Hatha Mc Divitt (PhD, ANU, with Jeremy Shearmur and Peter Singer, and Richard Joyce?).

Hatha is studying metaethics from an evolutionary perspective.

Drew Ninnis (PhD, ANU; main supervisor Fiona Jenkins)

People whose panels I think I’m on but who I haven’t helped at all yet: - Joy Mendel (PhD, ANU) - Ben Sworn (MA, ANU)

PhB students, 2008
